Roxie M Foster Newton was born March 20, 1946, to Dolores Addison Newman and Thomas Foster in Tallulah, Louisiana. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1947 during the great migration to the west to seek new opportunities. Roxie, lovingly called "Sugar Lump," by her family and friends, grew up in the Historic Westside during the peak of community growth and economic development in the urban village setting. She attending the historic Westside Elementary School as well as Madison Elementary in the community. Roxie was a proud graduate of Rancho High School in 1965, where she was active in the popular Pep Club and other school programs. She also was a contestant in the Miss Bronze Nevada Contest held at the Moulin Rouge in the 60's along with 16 other beautiful local young ladies in the community.
Roxie married Murry Newton of Shreveport Louisiana in 1965, and to this union they were blessed with four children: Derrick, Nannette, Lance, and Murray, born in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1963, Roxie joined Second Baptist Church, where she became a devoted Christian for the remainder of her life. She was a faithful member of the Choir and loyal member of the Prayer Band until her passing. Roxie served tirelessly as a teacher of the Sunday School Ministry Class #7 as well as the Vacation Bible School.
Roxie's desire to work with at risk students manifested in a career with the Clark County School District for many years. There, at the helm of groups such as the Soul Club of Eldorado High School consisted of African American students who were dedicated to positive changes at the school as well as in their communities.
Roxie later attended and graduated from Beauty College in Las Vegas. She was a professional nail technician at Dee Dee's Original Beauty Salon, in the Nucleus Shopping Center. This was a renowned African American owned family business for more than thirty years. Roxie was proud to serve there alongside her mother, Dolores Newman and daughter, Nannette Campbell.
Roxie was an active woman who enjoyed playing softball for the Foxy's Ladies, and avid averaging in the high 200's. She also enjoyed traveling and hosting parties for friends. She was a member of the Cosmetiques of Las Vegas. She belonged to "What Are Friends For Organization" who worked with the Elks, VFW and the American Legion to assist those in need in the community: Roxie served as President of this organization until her illness.
Roxie was an amazing mother, cook, and designer. She was a talented artist: she passed this gift to her eldest son, Derrick. Roxie enthusiastically attended her children's football, basketball, track meets and beauty pageants.
